What is diamond?
- The word diamond comes originally from a Greek word, ‘adamas’ which means unconquerable and indestructible.
- The largest diamond ever found is called the Cullinan and it weighs at 3,106.75 carats uncut. It was found in South Africa in 1905 and they now form part of the British crown jewels.
- The first mining for diamonds started in India in the 17th century.
- Contrary to popular belief, but diamonds are not forever! Though it is virtually the hardest substance, it can be pounded into powder and melted away at high temperatures. Though this is still arguable to a certain degree.
- About more than 65% of the diamonds in the world come from African countries while the rest comes from Australia, Canada, Russia and South America.
- Australia accounts for producing most diamonds in volume.
- 80% of the diamonds found are not suitable for jewelry.
- In every 1 thousand polished diamonds, only one will weigh more than 1 carat.
- To provide 1 carat of diamond, 250 tons of earth has to be mined.
