Diamond vs. Moissanite
Moissanite’s scientific name is Silicon carbide (SiC) and this mineral was first founded in fragment of an ancient meteorite in Arizona by Dr. Moissan in 1893. Hence, the substance was eventually named in honor of him. Moissanite in its natural form is extremely rare to find on Earth except from meteorites and in inclusions of diamonds. Therefore, due to the rarity, there is no natural supply for this stone.
A century later, a method to produce large and single Moissanites with silicon and carbon was found by Cree labs. This method was introduced to Charles & Colvard who holds the patent now and manufactures and markets this gemstone exclusively worldwide.
Many people, including gemologist, find it difficult to differentiate between a diamond and moissanite due to their highly matching properties such as weight and brilliant.
Now, let us make a more detailed comparison between moissanite and diamond.
| Moissanite | Diamond | |
| Brilliance | 2.65 | 2.42 |
| Certification | By Charles & Colvard | GIA and AGS (examples) |
| Characteristics used to judge quality grade | 4Cs | 4Cs |
| Color | Near colorless | Most diamonds are classified in this range |
| Cost | Moissanite costs approximately 1/10 of a diamond with equal quality. That aside, diamonds can be bought as an investment, however, average consumers do not buy investment grade diamonds as they very expensive. | |
| Density | 3.21 (Specific gravity) | 3.52 (Specific gravity) |
| Dispersion (Fire) | 0.104 | 0.044 |
| Hardness | 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale | 10 on the Mohs hardness scale |
| Supply source | Only Lab-created | Both natural and lab-created |
In summary, all moissanites are sold in very good quality. Moissanite is slightly less dense than diamond and is rarely perfectly clear of color, more reflective than diamond, and shows more brilliance than diamond and having pale shades of green. Natural flaws are absent in moissanite, replaced instead by tiny, unnatural, white, ribbon-like structures that are a result of the growing process.
Generally, most aspects of Mossanite are same or even better than diamond. Hence, it is good that you keep this alternative in mind if your partner does not mind not receiving a diamond.
